AMMAN — Nadeshiko Japan clinched its eighth straight berth in the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Friday by advancing to the semifinals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Japan, Australia and South Korea all finished with five points with one win and two draws, but under tournament regulations, Japan finished second after Australia, giving both teams a semifinal spot and automatic entry to next year’s World Cup in France.

直訳すると、等しくするものとなりますが一体どういった意味になるのでしょうか。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「平等にする人(もの)、均圧導線、同点、武器」とありました。

また、LDOCEでは “a point that you score in a game, that gives you the same number of points as your opponent” “something that makes all people equal because everyone experiences it in the same way” と記載されており、今回は前者の方の意味になります。

記事に戻ると、なでしこジャパンはオーストラリア女子代表と対戦し、1-1で引き分けました。その後、韓国対ベトナム戦の結果を受け、見事W杯出場を決めました。さらにアジアカップの予選という観点から見ると、準決勝進出も果たしています。なでしこジャパンといえばW杯2011年大会での優勝が記憶に強く残っています。次回は来年ということで、7年前と同じ光景に向かって突き進んで欲しいと思います。(sixth-dan)
