昨日で熊本地震発生から2年の時が過ぎ去りました。

取り上げる単語は wail /weɪl/ です。文脈から「サイレンが鳴る」という意味になると予想することは可能でしたが、確認のため手持ちの辞書で確認してみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第五版（大修館）で意味を引いてみると「［死などを/悲しみ・痛みで］嘆き悲しむ、泣き叫ぶ」「〈風・サイレンなどが〉泣くような音を出す」と載っていました。Oxford Dictionary of English （2th）
では“manifest or feel deep sorrow for; lament:”と定義されています。

語源について同辞書では“Middle English: from Old Norse; related to woe.”と記載されていたので woe についても調べてみると「悲哀、悲痛、苦悩」という意味を表し、語源は“Natural exclamation of lament: recorded as wā in Old English and found in several Germanic languages.”とのことでした。

ちなみにエルサレムにある「嘆きの壁」はWailing Wall または Western　Wall で表すことができます。

「鳴らす」という単語はほかにもいくつかありますが、今回の記事、状況ではこの単語が最適です。単語一つ一つの使い方にも気を配っていかなければならないと改めて実感しました。

復興は着実に一歩一歩進んでいるとのことですが、いまだにピーク時の８割の方が仮設住宅で生活されています。まだまだ復興にはほど遠い状況です。少しでも復興の助けになるようなことを探し、実行していきたいと感じました。(ko-chi)
