気になった表現は ruffle O’s feathers です。はじめは文脈から「困惑させていた」と予想しましたが、確信がなかったので『ジーニアス英和辞典』第５版(大修館)で意味を調べてみると「〈人を〉わずらわせる；怒らせる」とありました。
Oxford Dictionary of English (2th)には"cause someone to become annoyed or upset"と定義されています。

ruffle feathers を用いた表現はほかにも smooth one’s ruffled feathers「落ち着きを取り戻す」があり、同英英辞典では"make someone less angry or irritated by using soothing words"と記載されています。

ちなみにruffleは「動揺させる、いらだたせる」「〈羽毛〉を逆立てる」という意味を持っています。（ko-chi）
