Bird-like dinosaur Archaeopteryx could fly, but not very well
WASHINGTON – The famous dino-bird Archaeopteryx may not have been a champion aviator but was fully capable of flying despite key skeletal differences from its modern cousins, according to a study.
Scientists said on Tuesday they had examined Archaeopteryx’s wing architecture using state-of-the-art scanning and compared it to a range of birds, closely related dinosaurs and the extinct flying reptiles called pterosaurs. They concluded it could fly in bursts over relatively short distances like pheasants, peacocks and roadrunners.
state-of-the-artを取りあげます。LDOCEでstateをみると“the physical or normal condition that someone or something is in”とあり、技術の今の状況、つまり「最先端技術」となることがわかりました。
ちなみに、始祖鳥の科名であるアーケオプテリクス (archaeopteryx) は「古代の翼」を意味するらしく、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）でもpterodactyl (プテロダクティル、翼竜) という名前が似たような種類の恐竜も記載されていました。プテラノドン(Pteranodon)などにも共通して、「翼」の接頭辞であるptero-がついています。(flying bird)
