Nation abuzz with proliferation of beekeepers
A noticeable increase in beekeepers (see below) has been causing a buzz around the country, with the central and local governments providing support for increased production of honeybees essential for growing many fruits and vegetables. The number of hobbyist beekeepers is also increasing.
“Being able to raise honeybees in winter is one of Okinawa’s strengths. The number of beehive shipments and the number of beekeepers are growing right before our eyes,” said Tomohiro Tokiwa at a special center for honeybees shipments in Nago, Okinawa Prefecture, in mid-February. Tokiwa, 68, is chairman of the prefecture’s beekeeping cooperative.
That day, about 20 members of the cooperative and others were packing about 280 beehives, which contained about 8,000 honeybees, in containers for shipment.

hobbyistを取り上げます。hobbyは趣味という意味でよく知られていますが、先生のご著書にもあるように、日本語との「趣味」とはかなり差がある英語表現で、英語の方は「普通のpass timeではなく、とことんはまってしまうようなもの」でした。
それに人を表すistがついています。手持ちの紙辞書では見つからず、電子辞書の『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第4版 大修館書店）で調べると「趣味に熱中する人」とありました。
hobbyだけを『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で引くと「趣味、道楽（自分ひとりで集めたり、作ったりして楽しむ）」と記述されており、例として “the hobby of stamp collecting” が取り上げられています。マニアックに物を集める様子が伺えます。
この記事においてはhobbyist beekeepersと述べられていることから、養蜂を趣味として本格的に楽しむ人のことをさしているのではないかと思いました。（aqua）
