気になったのはタイトルにあるfall short / fôl shôrt/ です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）を引いてみると「〔目標・基準・期待などに〕達しない〔of〕」や「〈金・物などが〉不足する」や「事故に出くわす,もめごとに関わる」とありました。なぜこのような役になるのか分かりませんでしたが、shortの基本義は「基準に足りない」と『ジーニアス英和辞典』に載っていました。「短い」しか思い浮かばなかったので驚きました。（rain）
