今回気になった表現は cover-up です。coverという単語と文脈から今回の書き換えのことを指しているのだと予想しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第５版(大修館)で意味を調べてみると「（悪事・事件などの）もみ消し（工作）、隠蔽（工作）」とありました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th)では"an attempt to prevent people discovering truth about a serious mistake or crime"と定義されています。

また動詞で用いられる場合にはcover upとなり意味は「〈過ち・不都合な事実〉を隠す、隠蔽する」となります。動詞の場合は他にもいくつか意味を持っているので確認してみてください。

ちなみに同義語としてhush-up「もみ消し」、hush up「もみ消す」があります。さらに過去のブログを参照するとwhitewashも同様の意味を持っているとのことです。(ko-chi)
