東京オリンピックとパラリンピックの公式マスコットが決定しました。

Checkered pattern characters picked as 2020 Games mascots

The organizing committee of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics said Wednesday that the characters with traditional kumi ichimatsumon checkered patterns were chosen as mascots for the quadrennial sporting events.

The characters, chosen from three pairs of candidates, topped ballots at Japanese elementary schools with 109,041 votes. Each class had one vote.

　bead /bíːd/ を取り上げます。日本語でも「ビーズ」とカタカナで使われますが、他にどのような意味があるのか気になったので調べました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「1ガラス玉、ビーズ、じゅず玉　2（複数形で）じゅず、ロザリオ（rosary）；首飾り　3（露、汗、血の）玉、しずく」という意味が見つかりました。

　LDOCEには “one of a set of small, usually round, pieces of glass, wood, plastic etc, that you can put on a string and wear as jewellery” や “a small drop of liquid such as water or blood” と定義されています。

　上記の英和辞典によると、語源は「古（期）英語で祈りの意。じゅずを祈りの時に用いたので」と説明されています。過去のブログではbeadを用いた表現として「玉の汗」が取り上げられていました。（aqua）
