interdict 復習

北朝鮮がシリアの化学兵器開発を支援していたということが国連安全保障理事会の中で判明しました。

今回取り上げる単語は interdict /ìnṭɚdíkt｜‐tə‐/ です。まず『ジーニアス英和辞典』第５版(大修館)で意味を確認してみると「｟正式｠（みせしめとして、一定期間）…を禁ずる。」「｟米｠〈敵の攻撃など〉を阻止する。」とありました。

意味を聞くとそれほど難しい語ではありませんが、「みせしめとして」という部分に目を引かれました。それと同時にこの部分がこの語の一つの核ではないかと考えました。「禁ずる」と聞くとban, prohibitが真っ先に浮かぶと思いますが、この二つではなくinterdictが用いられた理由にはこれらの単語とはまた違った雰囲気をまとった単語であり、今回の文脈ではこちらの方がより適切であった、ということが考えられます。

日本語の訳語は同じでも英語として使う場合は、微妙なニュアンスの違いなどがあり、まったく同じ意味であるとは限らない、ということを頭に入れ、今後学習を進めたいと思います。

北朝鮮はこれによって得た資金でミサイル開発等を進めています。化学兵器の物資、技術を提供したお金でミサイルが作られている。これほど嫌な流れはありませんね。(ko-chi)
