carnage 復習
今回は、ここ1週間の中で特に気になったニュースに関する記事を取り上げます。
UNSC（United Nations Security Council＜国連安全保障理事会＞）は、アサド政権軍による首都ダマスカス郊外への空爆激化を受けて３０日間のシリア停戦決議案の採決を促しましたが、ロシアがそれに対する修正案を提出し、採決を阻止しています。
Russia blocks UNSC bid for ceasefire in Syria
UNITED NATIONS (AFP-Jiji) — After two weeks of negotiations, Russia on Thursday told the U.N. Security Council that there was still no agreement on a 30-day ceasefire in Syria, dimming hopes of international action to halt the carnage in Eastern Ghouta.
During a council meeting called by Russia, Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia presented a new raft of amendments to a draft resolution that would allow deliveries of humanitarian aid and medical evacuations during the pause.
Negotiations on the draft presented by Sweden and Kuwait on Feb. 9 have dragged on as hundreds of Syrians have died in a fierce government air campaign in the rebel-held enclave of Eastern Ghouta.
Nebenzia told the council that Sweden and Kuwait had requested a vote on the draft resolution even though they are “fully aware there is no agreement on it.”

気になったのはcarnage /ˈkɑː.nɪdʒ, ˈkɑːr.nɪdʒ/ です。まず、フランス語由来の接尾辞-ageで「こと」を連想し、直前のhalt「〜を停止する、中止する」から文脈判断して、「何かの動きや試み」「現在進行中のこと」を表しているのではないかと予測しました。『スーパー・アンカー英和辞典』（第五版、学研プラス）で調べたところ、「（戦争や紛争による）大虐殺、大量殺人」とありました。また、Cambridge Dictionaryでcarnageの定義について引くと、the violent killing of large numbers of people, especially in warとありますが、文章での訳文は、「シリア軍による東グータでの戦闘・大虐殺が中止される見込みは無いに等しい」となります。
さらに語源を調べると、Oxford DictionariesではEarly 17th century: from French, from Italian carnaggio, from medieval Latin carnaticum（肉による支払いまたは肉の供物）, from Latin caro, carn- ‘flesh’.と表記されてあり、中期フランス語、イタリア語、中世ラテン語を伴って派生してきた単語であることが分かります。
ちなみに、日本人が頻繁に用いる「修羅場」の意味は、英語でa scene of carnageとなります。私事ですが、留学先で修羅場に遭遇したとしても焦らず怖気付かず、人間として、そして男として成長できればと思っている次第です。いかなる修羅場が待ち受けているのか楽しみです。(broccoli)
