千葉県では白鳥がここで冬を過ごしています。ここにいる白鳥の多くは近年ツンドラ白鳥として認知され始めていています。多くの見物者が大きい白鳥を見ようと訪れています。

Northern Chiba, where I often cycle, consists of two basic types of topography typical of the south Kanto region: plateau-like uplands dissected by narrow, highly branched valleys; and a wide flat alluvial plain, just barely above sea level, surrounding the Inba and Tega Marshlands.
On some days, powerful winter winds blast across the plain, but on calm days, the flat roads are easy to cycle. In addition, the large paddies and extensive network of irrigation canals provide excellent habitats for wintering waterfowl. In one spot, the local farmers keep some of the paddies filled with shallow water, and provide a daily supply of rice grains that attract a large flock of swans and ducks.

”winter”/wíntə/に着目します。Winterという馴染み深い言葉が動詞として使われていたので気になりました。この文章ではwintering waterfowlとして形容詞的に使われていました。「寒さに凍える」といった意味があるのかなと予測しました。(『ジーニアス英和辞典第五版』大修館)によると「冬を過ごす、越冬する」とありました。同じ意味では”pass the winter”なども出てきました。一語で表せる単語は文章をスッキリさせてくれるのでいい単語だなと思いました。

ほかにも似たよう事例では”water”なども「水」という意味の他に「水をやる」という意味があります。中学生の時から知っていた単語に他の意味が含まれているとは思わないことがあるので、今後はそのような身近な言葉に含まれた他の意味にもしっかりと目を向けて着実に語彙を増やしていこうと思いました。(Creative)
