firebrandに着目しました。-brandは「銘柄」「烙印」などを表現しますが, ここでは異なる意味で用いられているようです。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で確認すると, 「(ストライキなどの)煽動者; 大精力家」とありました。もともと「燃え木」を指すことに由来しています。

続いてMerriam-Webster.comには, one that creates unrest or strife (as in aggressively promoting a cause) と定義され, 同義語としてagitatorが挙げられていました。

さらに通例「松明」を表すtorchと比較したところ, firebrandはa piece of burning woodであるのに対し, torchはa burning stick of resinous wood or twist of tow used to give light and usually carried in the handというように, 用法に若干の違いが見られました(同英英辞典)。(Cayu)
