何千年もの歴史のなかで明らかにされなかった南極大陸についての謎が近い将来把握できるかもしれません。
Scientists will set out in the next week to study an Antarctic realm that has been hidden for thousands of years.
A British Antarctic Survey-led team will explore the seabed ecosystem exposed when a giant iceberg broke away from the Antarctic Peninsula in 2017.
The organization has also released the first video of the berg, which covers almost 6,000 sq km.
Its true scale begins to emerge in a shot filmed from an aircraft flown along its edge.
Prof David Vaughan, science director at BAS stressed that it was a treacherous journey but said the team needed to "be bold".
"Larsen C is a long way south and there's lots of sea ice in the area, but this is important science, so we will try our best to get the team where they need to be," he said.
"The calving of A68 offers a new and unprecedented opportunity to establish an interdisciplinary scientific research programmed in this climate-sensitive region. Now is the time to address fundamental questions about the sustainability of polar continental shelves under climate change."

“interdisciplinary” /ɪn.t̬ɚˈdɪs.ə.plɪ.ner.i/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「多分野に跨がった、学際的な、共同研究の」という意味がありました。『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をみると “involving two or more different subjects or areas of knowledge” とあり、二つやそれ以上からなる学問どちらの分野にまで広げて物事を研究する様を表していることがわかります。
goo 英和和英辞典をみると、“interdisciplinary” は「〜の間、際」という意味合いを含む接頭辞 “inter” と「学問の」という意味のある “disciplinary” が結び付いた語であるとわかりました。したがって「学問と学問の間、際」と直訳でき、同時に学問と学問を点と点で結ぶというイメージを抱くことから「様々な分野に跨がっている」というニュアンスで用いられるようになったと推察できます。また “interdisciplinary” に「学際」という日本語訳が付けられるようになったのは1970年代からの事で、“interdisciplinary” と同じ語源から成り立った “international” (“inter” と “national” が結び付いてできた語) を「国際的な」と訳したことにならって、学問の分野において様々に交わっている様を現す語として「学際的な」と訳されるようになったとされています。
南極大陸は人類の長い歴史の中で人類が文明を築くことの出来なかった未踏の地あるいは未開の地と言われています。そんな南極についての情報を私達が簡単に手にすることが出来る時代もそう遠くないのかもしれません。(Hapidra)
