　オバマ前アメリカ大統領とミシェル夫人の肖像画の除幕式がワシントンの国立肖像画美術館で行われました。

WASHINGTON (AFP-Jiji) — Former U.S. first couple Barack and Michelle Obama unveiled their portraits at Washington’s National Portrait Gallery Monday, two contrasting works by African American artists that shocked and delighted.

The paintings by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, were revealed at a star-studded event that is a rite of passage for most former American presidents.

The museum holds portraits of all American ex-commanders in chief, but these latest additions stand in stark contrast to the more buttoned-down approach of traditional presidential portraiture.

Both show their subjects — America’s first black presidential couple — looking cool and confident, a stark contrast to the bubbling swamp of anger and braggadocio that is political Washington today.

　“braggadocio” /br`ægədóʊsiòʊ/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると「自慢屋、大ぼら吹き、大嘘つき」といった意味がありました。『ケンブリッジ英英辞典』をみると “great confidence that someone expresses in their own abilities and qualities” とあり、自分自身を過大評価している様を表しています。
　goo 英和和英辞典というサイトをみると、この語はイギリスの詩人Edmund Spenserが著した「The Faerie Queene」（妖精の女王）という物語に出てくる大ぼらを吹いて人々を困らせる登場人物 “Braggadocchio” に由来していることがわかりました。「大ぼら」は「自分の実力を過信し実際にそれさえも疑わしいものであるのに豪語する」またニュアンスを含むため “lie” や “deceive” よりも強い意味合いで伝わることも窺えます。
　除幕式では夫妻が出席し数年ぶりに公に姿を表した形となりました。この美術館には歴代大統領の肖像画を収集いるそうですが、初の黒人大統領としてオバマ前大統領の肖像画が展示に加わることになります。 (Hapidra)
