North Korea asks for fuel to cover cost of trip to South Korea
SEOUL--North Korea demanded payment in kind, at a highly inflated rate, for the fuel guzzled to ferry the prized Samjiyon orchestra to South Korea for the Pyeongchang Olympics.
Pyongyang requested 500 tons of fuel to cover the return trip of the cargo-passenger ship Man Gyong Bong-92 that arrived Feb. 6 at the port of Mukho in the city of Donghae, eastern Gangwon Province, according to well-placed sources.

“guzzle”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「(…を)がぶがぶ飲む、がつがつ食う(away, down)；〈車などが〉(〈燃料〉を)食う；(〈時・金〉を)酒食で浪費する(away)」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“if a vehicle guzzles petrol, it uses a lot of it in a wasteful way”と定義されています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』の訳が「食う」という言葉を使っていることから丁寧な言葉ではないのではないかと予想したのですが、思った通りLDOCEにはinformalと語の横に載っていました。ちなみに、“gas-guzzler”で「(燃費の悪い)大型車」という意味になるそうです(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。(Blue Sky)
