Land of Nod, the

　今回取り上げる表現は、the Land of Nod です。LDOCE で確認すると、”an old-fashioned or humorous expression meaning the imaginary place you go to when you are asleep, used especially when you are talking to or about children” とあり、「居眠り」してることを指すことがわかります。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館)をみると、「眠りの国、睡眠」とありました。
　また、この表現はもともと “the land of Nod” 「ノドの国」を表し、「カインがアベルを殺害後移住したといわれるエデンの東にある地」を指すと同書にあります。カインとアベルは聖書に登場し、人類最初の殺人の加害者と被害者とされています。
　この表現の由来は『新英和中辞典』(研究社)に「[由来] nod のジョークから」とあるので、nod (うとうとする)と Nod(ノド)をかけた表現と解することができます。(OkaUchi)
