SKI JUMPING/ Kasai chosen as Olympic team member for eighth time
Despite a subpar season, Noriaki Kasai earned a spot on Japan’s Olympic ski jumping team for the eighth straight time.
The Ski Association of Japan on Jan. 11 announced the five men and four women on the team that will compete in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea.
The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 9.
If Kasai, 45, does actually compete in Pyeongchang, he would set the Japanese record for most Olympic appearances.

subpar/səbpɑ́r/を取りあげます。LDOCEで“something that is subpar is below the level of quality, performance etc that you would usually expect”と定義されているように「ふつう（機体された）以下の」を表します。同表現としてbelow par, under par, not up to parがあり、ゴルフの「パー」が由来となっています（『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）より）。
今シーズンは追い風に見舞われるなどの悪条件で本選出場を逃してしまうこともありましたが、過去２シーズンでＷ杯や夏のグランプリで８位以内に１回入っており、五輪選出基準を満たしていることから代表に選ばれたそうです。(flying bird)
