“limelight”/láɪmlàɪt/を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「(特にマスコミからの)脚光、注目」とありました。基本的に冠詞の“the”を伴うようです。今回の記事でもこの形になっています。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“a situation in which someone receives a lot of attention, especially from newspapers, television etc”と定義されていました。
ちなみに、“limelight”の第２義には「石灰光」とあります。コトバンクによると、石灰光とは、「石灰に酸水素炎を吹きつけて白熱させたときに発する強い白色光」で、昔はスポットライトとしてや舞台照明として使われていたこともあるそうです。この背景から、「脚光」という意味が生まれたのだと思われます。(Blue Sky)
