“encroachment” /ɪnˈkroʊtʃ.mənt/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると、「侵入、蚕食、侵害」といった意味があるとわかります。次に英英辞典をみると “the act of gradually taking away someone else's rights, or taking control of someone's time, work, etc” と定義されていて、他人の権利を蔑ろにしたり他人の支配下にあるのにも関わらず勝手に何かを行う様を表しているとわかります。
“encroachment” はもともと古フランス語で「フックに引っ掻けて捕らえる、閉じ込める」といった意味がある “encrochier” から派生した “encroach” の名詞形であることもわかりました。
「侵害」というニュアンスを含む語は “encroachment” 以外にも存在しますが、例えば “violation” は「違反、冒涜、暴行」といった意義を持ち、法律などの成文法の上、あるいは倫理観やモラルといった文に記されていない場合などどちらにしても約束事を破るといった意味を含んでいるそうです。また同意義を持つ “trespass” には「つけこむ」といったニュアンスを含み人の良心につけこんで迷惑行為や悪事を働くという原義から「侵害」となったと推察できます。
衝突は１日に発生し、アルジェリアのフラニ族と思われる遊牧民の集団が、なたを振りかざして農家を襲撃したことがきっかけとされています。(Hapidra)
