diaphanous /dʌɪˈaf(ə)nəs/ に注目しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、 「〈布などが〉透明な；半透明の」、「〈風景などが〉かすんだ，ぼんやりした」、「〈望みなどが〉非現実的な」などと載っておりました。
Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) には、 “(especially of fabric) light, delicate, and transparent”と定義されております。以上から、布などによく用いられる単語であることが分かります。文中でもカーテンのことを指しております。
元はギリシャ語のdiaphanesで、diaが “through”、phaineinが “to show”を表しています。
