　今回はイギリスのパスポートについてのニュースを取り上げます。イギリスが欧州連合（EU）を離脱した後のパスポートが現在の赤紫色から青に変更されるそうです。

Theresa May's communications director has hit out at "fake news" after a claim about the cost of post-Brexit blue British passports was shared tens of thousands of times on Twitter.

Ex-Dragon's Den panellist James Caan had shared claims the passports would cost £500m but later withdrew them.

Robbie Gibb said deliberately misrepresenting government policies “harms
our democracy".

The new passports will be issued from October 2019.

The redesign, which happens routinely every five years, will come as part of a £490m contract which also includes printing and assembling passports and runs for 11 and a half years.

But Mr Caan had claimed it would cost £500m just to change the color

He tweeted: "A country that would spend £500m to change the color of a passport while children sleep on the streets is a country whose priorities are wholly out of whack."

　”out of whack“ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると ”whack“ は「(強く棒などで) 叩く、ぴしゃりと打つ、(素早く) 入れる」あるいは 「(お金や仕事などの)量や額、分配、分け前」といった意味があるといえます。英英辞典をみてみても ”the action of hitting someone or something noisily“ また “to quickly put something somewhere” と定義され、強く音を立てながら何かを打ったり、咄嗟に何かを置いたり入れたりする様を表していると分かります。
　“out of” は「〜がなくなる、〜が不足している」といったニュアンスを含む句であるとうかがえます。それに “whack” が組合わさった “out of whack” は「強く打つことができなくなる、素早く行動できなくなる」と直訳できます。つまり、元々あった俊敏さや強い力がなくなって上手く作動しない様を表しているとうかがえます。さらに辞書を引くと “out of whack” で主にアメリカ英語で「具合が悪い、調子の狂った、状況が良くない」と意訳され口語で用いられるとわかりました。
　22日に発表されたこのニュースの内容に一部誤りがあったとしてメイ首相側の側近いわば政府側の人間が「フェイクニュース」だと反論している模様です。(Hapidra)
