見出しで使われている“well-wisher”を取り上げます。使われている単語はそんなに難しくなく、今はだいたい分かりそうですが、厳密にはどのような意味なのか気になったので、調べてみました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』では、「(人や物事に対する)支援行動を起こす人、支持者；人の幸運[成功]を願う人」と載っています。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“someone who shows by their behaviour that they like someone and want them to succeed, be happy etc”と定義されていました。誰かの成功や繁栄を望む人のことを“well-whisher”で表現することがあるみたいです。記事では誕生日を迎えられた天皇陛下を祝う一般参賀に集まった人たちを表す言葉なので、「支持者」が日本語としてはしっくりくるとは思います。ただそれだけではなく、天皇陛下がこれからもご健康でいられるようにと願う思いも含まれている表現なのかと思います。(Blue Sky)
