laypeople 復習

京都・西本願寺で20日, 年末恒例の「すす払い」が行われました。
Monks and laypeople beat tatami mats with bamboo slats during year-end cleaning called “susuharai” at the Nishi Honganji temple in Kyoto on Wednesday. They stir up the dust accumulated throughout this year and blow it away using paper fans.

laypeopleを取り上げます。動詞layは「横たえる」としておなじみですが, 本文では用法が異なるようです。『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)を引くと, laypersonで「(聖職者に対して)平信徒」「(専門家に対して)しろうと」とありました。layman, またlaywomanも同様のニュアンスとなります。
続いてMerriam-Webster.comには “a member of the laity” と定義されていました。さらに laypersonの成り立ちを調べたところ, 接頭辞lay-は「[教会]雑用を仕事とする」「(特に医学について)本職でない」の意を指しているとのことです(同英和辞典)。(Cayu)
