off-the-cuff 復習

　一昨昨日のUG先生の被害記事に登場した、off-the-cuffを調べてみました。

『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、 「〈演説などが〉即席の，準備なしでの，ぶっつけ本番の」と載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) では、“without preparation”と定義されております。
　さらに、インターネットで語源を調べたところ、 “in the 1930s it was common for people to write notes on their shirt cuffs -- well, if not common to actual do, at least an idea that many were familiar with. So if you were going to give a speech but hadn't actually prepared something and written it up, you might jot some hasty notes to yourself on your shirt cuffs”という説明を見つけました。今ではあまりなじみがありませんが、昔は袖にメモをしていたようです。準備ができていたならば、特に焦ってメモする必要もありません。裏を返せば、準備なしで何かをする場合、あせってメモなどを残すことから、この表現ができたようです。
