A gigantic new kite, as big as 20 tatami mats, is displayed in Yorii, Saitama Prefecture, on Tuesday. One of the massive kites to be flown at Yorii Odako-age, the town’s annual event on New Year’s Day, it is made of bamboo from Yorii and washi paper produced in Chichibu in the prefecture. The Buddhist goddess Benten is drawn in black and scarlet sumi ink playing a biwa Japanese lute.

　見出しの“sheets to the wind”を取りあげます。「凧を飛ばす」の意味もとれますが、『ブルーワー英語故事成語大辞典』（大修館書店）で確認すると「非常に酔っぱらって」とありました。LDOCEの“sheet”の項目に“a rope or chain attached to a sail on a ship that controls the angle between a sail and the wind”とあるように、この場合は「帆耳にくくりつけた網」のことをを指します。ロープなどで固定されずに風でぱたぱたと「酔っぱらっている」様子を“in the wind”といい、“a sheet in the wind”は「酔いのために足がふらついた」状態を指します。これは航海日常的に使われる表現だそうです。よって、two, three …と帆の数が増えれば増えるほど酔っている段階がひどくなっていくようです。(flying bird)
