“gruesome” /ɡruː.səm/ を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典第5版』(大修館) によると、「身も毛もよだつ、ぞっとする、凄絶な、不愉快な」とあります。英英辞典をみると “extremely unpleasant and shocking, and usually dealing with death or injury” と定義されていて、主に死や負傷に伴って過度なショックや恐怖感を抱く様を表しているとわかります。
“gruesome” は、もともとスコットランド語の方言で「震える」というニュアンスのある “grue” と「〜を伴う、〜化する」という意味を持つ接尾辞 ”some“ が結び付いてできたとされています。
この語は英英辞典にもあるように「ぞっとする、驚く」程度の大きい様を表していることがいえます。そのため、”an unpleasant feeling that you experience when something new or unusual happens“ と定義される ”shock”や “be ugly or bad” と説明がある “hideous” とは異なり、とてつもなくぞっとしたり驚いたりした際に “gruesome” を用いるのが適切といえるでしょう。
コンゴでは昨年12月から現大統領に対する抗争デモが長い間続いていて、政府は次期大統領選を2018年12月まで延期する意向を示しているそうです。(Hapidra)
