Paris: Legend-slaying scientists on Wednesday dismantled the myth of the abominable snowman, the towering yet furtive half-human rumoured for centuries to inhabit inaccessible reaches of the Himalayas.
It turns out, they report in the Royal Society journal Proceedings B, that the long-sought creature, also known as Yeti, is in fact a bear.
Or three different bears, to be precise: the Asian black, the Tibetan brown and Himalayan brown.

“abominable snowman”を取りあげます。「雪男」を意味しますが“abominable” /əbɑ'mənəbl/とは何を指すのでしょうか。LDOCEを見てみると“extremely unpleasant or of very bad quality”と定義されているように「最悪の」「嫌な」という悪い意味が強いことが分かりました。しかし雪男に関して人に悪影響を与えるような印象はあまりないように思えます。Online etymology dictionaryで語源を探ると17世紀頃にラテン語の“away from man”という意味も使われるようになり、そこから“abominable snowman”となったようです。
これまで行われてきたイエティ研究に比べて、今回の調査に使われた遺伝子学的証拠は多く、正体は熊であったことがより確実なものとなりました。(flying bird)
