shun 復習

　気になった単語は"shun" です。このままローマ字読みしてしますと、日本人男性の名前になってしまいますね。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館）を参照すると、「（やる気がなく、用心して）〈人、物など〉を避ける、遠ざける」とありました。避けると言えばavoidも同時に浮かび上がりますね。こちらは、「〈事故、災害、危険〉を未然に避ける」という意味でよく使われるそうです。"shun"という語は、950年以前の中期英語ではshunenと、また古期英語ではscunianと表され、「避ける、恐れる」を意味していたそうです。(Large Lake)
