Dinosaur-killing asteroid hit vital spot

Dinosaurs might still be thriving today if the huge asteroid believed to have caused their extinction 66 million years ago had hit several hundred kilometers away from the actual impact site, according to a study by researchers from Tohoku University and another institution.

The study was published in the British journal Scientific Reports.

In the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, there are traces of a crater created by the impact of an asteroid about 10 kilometers in diameter. One theory suggests the asteroid burned Earth’s surface in a way that formed stratospheric soot and other substances. The theory also states those substances were flung up into the air and blocked out the sun, leading to global cooling that caused the dinosaurs’ extinction.

Based on this assertion, Tohoku University Prof. Kunio Kaiho, who specializes in life and environmental history, and Naga Oshima, a senior researcher at the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Meteorological Research Institute, examined specific conditions for their extinction.

　stratospheric /str`æṭəsfí(ə)rɪk/ を取り上げます。今回は予想がつかなかったので、早速調べてみました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引くと、stratosphericそのものはありませんでしたが、stratosphereで「（the〜）成層圏（大気圏の一部；地上約10-60キロメートルの間で温度の変化が少なく雲を生じない部分）」とありました。stratosphericはこれの形容詞の形です。

　LDOCEには “relating to the outer part of the air surrounding the Earth” や “a stratospheric price, amount, level etc is extremely high or great” と定義されています。
　 また、上記の英和辞典によると、soot は「すす」を表す言葉であることから、 “formed stratospheric soot and other substances” という部分からは、成層圏内にすすやその他いろいろな物質が含まれている様子が読み取れます。日本語の記事を探してみると、大気中に広がった大量のすすが太陽光を遮り、気温が大きく下がったことが原因ではないかと考えられているとのことでした。（aqua）
