　平等院鳳凰堂では18日から夜間特別拝観が行われています。

The Phoenix Hall of Byodoin temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, glows at night during a trial illumination on Friday. The luminous hall, a national treasure, and colorful autumn leaves of Japanese maple trees are reflected on the surface of the water. The temple is hosting special night visits during the autumn foliage season for the first time, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., this weekend, Thursday to next Sunday, and Dec. 1 to 3. Monsho Kamii, the temple’s chief priest, said: “With the recent drop in temperatures, the autumn leaves have turned vibrant colors. We hope visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll.”

　foliage /fóʊlɪdʒ/ を取り上げます。 “autumn foliage season” とあることから、紅葉シーズンを意味していることはわかるのですが、leafと何が違うのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）によると、「（１本の木の）葉（全体）」と説明されています。foliageを用いると木に生えている葉全部を一度にさすことがわかりました。

　LDOCEには “the leaves of a plant” と定義されており、leavesと複数になっています。

以前ブログに取り上げられていた表現を見てみると、他の言い方で “fall foliage” が取り上げられていました。さらに、葉の色が変わる様子は “turn red” もしくは “turn yellow” でいうことができると思っていたのですが、 “turn crimson” ともいうことができると述べられていました。上記の英和辞典ではcrimsonは「深紅色（やや紫がかった濃い赤）」とあることから、紅葉した深い赤色を表現するにはぴったりくるのだなと思いました。（aqua）
