tinselが気になったため調べてみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、 「ピカピカ光る金属片〈衣装・クリスマスツリーなどの装飾用〉; 金銀糸」、「安ピカ物」などと載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) には、 “stand or wait around without apparent purpose”、 “a form of decoration consisting of thin strips of shiny metal foil attached to a long piece of thread”と定義されております。
語源はフランス語のestinceleで、 “spark”という意味だそうです。さらに遡るとラテン語までたどり着きます。
