U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday morning arrived in Japan, the first stop on his five-nation Asia tour.

“take office” を取り上げます。 “be in office” では在職している状態を表すことから、takeを用いるとその職に就く（就任する）となりそうです。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で確認すると、「就任する」とありました。
Merriam-Websterには “to begin the job or responsibility of one in a position of authority especially in the government” と定義されています。主に政治関連で使われる表現であることがわかります。
