Subaru admits inspections done by uncertified staff
Subaru Corp. let uncertified workers at its main plant in Gunma Prefecture inspect finished vehicles before shipment, which could involve 225,000 units, the company disclosed on Oct. 27.
The improper practice was revealed by the company’s internal investigation, which had been conducted in response to a recent Nissan Motor Co. scandal in which unauthorized workers performed safety checks of automobiles before being shipped.
The disclosure will further dent trust in Japanese automakers’ quality control, due to the string of illegal inspections that have come to light.
Subaru will submit inspection reports to the transport ministry on Oct. 30 and plans to issue a vehicle recall.

dentを取り上げます。後ろにtrustがくることから、信用を失うという意味になるのだろうと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で引くと、「1（…）をへこませる 2（評判など）を弱める、損なう」とありました。また、名詞では車などの「へこみ」を意味し、例として “Mom put quite a dent in the car.” で「ママは車をだいぶへこませてしまった。」という文が取り上げられています。
LDOCEには “if you dent something, or if it dents, you hit or press it so that its surface is bent inwards” や “to damage or harm something” と定義されています。
この記事においては「信用を損なう」という意味で用いられていますが、自動車に関する話題であることから、上記の例にあったように車体がへこむという意味を表すこともできるdentが選ばれたのではないかと思いました。（aqua）
