　Two US yachtswomen and their two dogs have been rescued by the US Navy after spending nearly five months adrift in the Pacific Ocean, officials say.
　Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiaba had set off in a small sailing boat from Hawaii on a trip to Tahiti when their engine, damaged by the bad weather, failed.
　Their boat then drifted in the open seas about 1,500km (930 miles) southeast of Japan.
　They were rescued after a fishing vessel alerted US authorities. …
　"They saved our lives," Ms Appel said, adding: "The pride and smiles we had when we saw [the US Navy] on the horizon was pure relief."

　まず、意味を確認します。『ジーニアス英和大辞典』(大修館)をみると、「(1)厳しい試練、苦しい体験、(2)[歴史]試罪法、神判」とあります。今回、取り上げた記事では「厳しい試練」という意味で使われています。辞書にあったもう一方の「試罪法、神判」が気になったので調べました。これは、日本でいう「盟神探湯」に相当します。『新英和大辞典』(研究社)でこの説明をみてみると、 “trial by hot water in which a suspected person’s hand was put into boiling hot water, the innocent thought not to develop burns” となっています。
　さらに、ordealで実際に行われていたことを『ジーニアス英和大辞典』(大修館)でみると、「 “~ by water” (容疑者を縛って水中に沈める), “~ by hot water” (熱湯の入った容器に手を入れ中の石を取り出させる), “~ hot iron”(焼けた鉄の棒を握らせる), “~ by morsel”(パンまたはチーズ１オンスを飲み込ませる)」がありました。
　日本でも海外でも、これまで様々な審議法・処刑法が考えられ、行われてきました。現在日本には死刑制度があり、これが議論の的になっています。時が経てば経つほど、その方法も進化していくとも考えられます。そのうち、犯罪人の記憶を消し、人格を失わせ、再教育するなんていう恐ろしいことも可能になるのではないでしょうか。そうならないようにも、法やAI問題など多方に関心を持つことが肝心です。(OkaUchi)
