“calibrate”/kˈæləbrèɪt/を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「〈計器など〉のメモリ[口径]を測定する[調整する、決める]」とありました。また、LDOCEでは“to check or slightly change an instrument or tool, so that it does something correctly”と定義されています。『ウィズダム英和辞典』そして“LDOCE”には「機器のメモリを測定する」といった語義しか載っていなかったので、「英辞郎 on the WEB」でも調べてみました。そうしたところ、「〜を調整[修正]する」とあり、“calibrated to an individual's brain activity”「個人の脳の活動に合わせて調整される」という例もありました。以上から、技術的に「調整する」という意味のほかにも幅広く使うことができる表現であるようです。
