gambitを取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、「（チェス）序盤のさし手」、「（交渉などで）口火となる言葉，先発的な行動」などと載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) によると、"an act or remark that is calculated to gain an advantage, especially at the outset of a situation"と定義されております。
語源はイタリア語のgambettoだそうです。tripping up つまり「つまづく，あげ足をとる」という意味だそうです。gambitのgamは元々はgambaで「脚」という意味をもっています。(Gomez)
