Police: Suspect, 74, likely the nimble-footed ‘Ninja of Heisei’

Police believe a 74-year-old unemployed man is the serial burglar dubbed the “Ninja of Heisei” for his black outfits and remarkable agility that helped him elude capture for nearly a decade.

Mitsuaki Tanigawa, who lives in Osaka’s Chuo Ward, is currently on trial on charges of breaking into an electronics shop in Higashi-Osaka and stealing 27,000 yen ($240) in cash in July. He has admitted to the allegations.

“I thought I would never be caught,” Tanigawa was quoted as saying. “I am defeated.”

Prefectural police said Oct. 19 that Tanigawa was likely the Ninja of Heisei who committed a series of nighttime burglaries at houses and shops in Higashi-Osaka over an eight-year period.

　elude /əlúːd/ を取り上げます。 “that helped him elude capture” とあることから、「逃げる」という意味になるのだろうと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には「1（うまく）身をかわして（…）を避ける、逃れる　2（欲しい物などが）（人）の手に入らない　3（…）にとってとらえにくい、理解できない、思い出せない」とありました。するするっと手から滑り落ちていく感じがします。
　LDOCEにはいくつか意味がありましたが、 「避ける、逃れる」という意味については “to escape from someone or something, especially by tricking them” と定義されており、人を騙して逃げるという方法をさすことがわかりました。
　犯人の特徴である真っ黒の服装や機敏な動きなどから、なかなか捕まえることができなかった様子がeludeに表れていると感じました。（aqua）
