Japan’s new maglev train line runs headlong into critics
Deep beneath the Japanese Alps, mountain ranges that stretch across Honshu island, workers are tunnelling, blasting their way forward at a pace of 5m a day. The air is chilly. Groundwater flows in abundance. The 25km tunnel, spanning three prefectures, is one of the most difficult civil engineering projects in the world. At its deepest point, there will be 1,400m of mountain bearing down upon it.

maglevを取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、「リニアモーターカー」とのことでした。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) によると、"a transport system in which trains glide above a track, supported by magnetic repulsion and propelled by a linear motor"と定義されております。magがmagnetic、levがlevitation（空中浮上）のそれぞれの頭が合わさってできた単語です。
ちなみに、リニアモーターカーは（和製英語ですが）英語でlinear motor carと書きます。linear motor で電気系の専門用語で直線になっているモーターのことを指します。induction motor とも言うようです。(Gomez)
