今回取り上げる単語は、besiege /bɪsíːdʒ/ です。まず意味を確認します。『ジーニアス英和大辞典』(大修館)をみると、「(1) を包囲する、に押し寄せる、を取り囲む、(2) を[要求などで]攻める、(3) を悩ます」とあります。使用例としては、”the besieged” で 「籠城軍」などが挙げられます。
　次に語源を確認します。同書によると、[初14c ; 中英語 bisege. be-(•••する)+siege(包囲攻撃) ]とあり、siege の語源も確認すると、
[初13c ; ラテン語 sedēre(座る、座っている). →「居座る → 包囲する」]とありました。
