Thousands dress up as Where's Wally to break world record

Thousands of people dressed up as the Where's Wally character here Oct. 8 to break the Guinness World Records entry for the most “Wallys” in one location.

Officials were on hand to count 4,626 “Wallys” at the Dutch-themed Huis Ten Bosch theme park, which exceeded the previous record of 3,872, set in Ireland in 2011.

Participants in outfits modeled on the British children's book character satisfied the conditions of being in Wally mode--distinctive red-and-white striped long-sleeved T-shirt, bobble hat with red band and attached with red pom pom, and transparent lens glasses--for five minutes.

　bobble /bάbl/ を取り上げます。bobble hatとあることから、ウォーリーがかぶっているニットの帽子のことを表しているのだろうと思いました。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「1（米）しくじり；（球の）扱いそこね、ファンブル（fumble） 2（英）毛糸玉」とありました。アメリカ英語とイギリス英語でそれぞれ少しずつ意味が異なるようです。
　LDOCEには “British English a small soft ball, usually made of wool, that is used especially for decorating clothes” と定義されています。 bobble hatは毛糸でできた帽子ととらえると、ニット帽と訳すことができるかと思います。（aqua）
