Nissan's botched quality checks company-wide and deliberate
Suspicions are fast emerging that the massive recall announced by Nissan Motor Co. was due to systematic and fraudulent procedures that were organizational and possibly approved at higher levels.
Nissan announced Sept. 29 that almost all of its cars manufactured domestically between October 2014 and September 2017 may have undergone final vehicle inspections by unauthorized personnel in some criteria.

“botched”を取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「不出来な、下手な〈仕事など〉」とありました。“botch”という動詞からきている表現ですが、こちらは「(不注意・未熟で)…をしくじる、やり損なう、台なしにする；…を下手に修理する (up)」という意味になります。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“to do something badly, because you have been careless or because you do not have the skills to do it properly”と定義されていました。今回の記事では「ずさんな確認」を表現するために用いられていますが、定義の中に「下手に修理する」や“do not have the skills”という文言が含まれており、今回の無資格者が関わっていた問題を表すのに最適な表現だと思います。(Blue Sky)
