 『ブルーワー故事成語英語事典』(大修館書店)でたまたま“jacket”の文字が目に留まったので取り上げます。日本語でも親しまれているように、上着の「ジャケット」としての意味もありますが“to be cooked in their jacket”で「ジャガイモを皮をついたまま調理する」となることがわかりました。また、LDOCEで確認すると“jacket potato”で“a potato baked baked with its skin on”と定義されており、イギリス英語だそうです。BBCの料理のベイクドポテトの作り方の記事にも使われています。

 また、同じ“jacket”を使った表現として”I’ll dust your jacket for you.”「人をぶんなぐる」という表現も同上事典に記載されていたので一緒に覚えておきます。“jacket”の部分には“doublet”(ベストの前身の上着)や“trousers”といった衣類が入ることがあるようです。(flying bird)
