今回は飲料水のブランドとしても日本でもおなじみとなったgeyser /ˈɡiːzə/ /ˈɡʌɪzə/ をとりあげます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、「間欠泉」、「（台所・風呂などの）自動湯沸かし器」などと載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English(Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)にも、 "a hot spring in which water intermittently boils, sending a tall column if water and stream into the air"や “a gas-fired water heater through which water flows as it is rapidly heated”などと定義されておりました。この文章では機械の方の意味で用いられていると思われます。ちなみに語源はアイスランドの泉からきているようです。 (Gomez)
