Date ends career with a whole lot of love
TOKYO (AFP-Jiji) — Kimiko Date, the grande dame of women’s tennis, bowed out of the sport after being thrashed 6-0, 6-0 by Aleksandra Krunic at the Japan Women’s Open on Tuesday.
The former world No. 4, who turns 47 later this month, was simply no match for a Serbian opponent who at 24 is young enough to be Date’s daughter. Krunic took just 49 minutes to inflict the dreaded “double bagel” on Date in a lop-sided first round encounter in Tokyo.

“lop-sided” /ˈlɑp.saɪ.dɪd(米), ˈlɒp.saɪ.dəd(英)/を取りあげます。LDODEでは“having one side that is lower or heavier than the other”と定義されており、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では「（勝負が一方的な）」とありました。
“lop”は「勢いよく枝などを切り落とす」の意味があり、クルニッチ選手は6-0を2セット奪うほどの相手にスキを与えないほどの勢いで、伊達選手は「完封負けした」ことがわかります。
“lop”には他にも「垂れる、ぶらさがる」も表し、耳が垂れたウサギの「ロップイヤー」(lop eared rabbit)と共に覚えたいと思います。(flying bird)
