　前期の応用言語学でも学んだ術語ですが， "portmanteau"を取り上げます。文脈からも意味は分かりますが，一応，『ジーニアス英和辞典』を引いてみました。名詞で「旅行鞄(両開きで長方形)」形容詞で「2つ以上の用途を持った」と記載されていました。またLDOCEには、"a very large suitcase that opens into two parts" "a portmanteau word is made by combining the sound and meaning of two other words" と定義されていました。
これは、ルイス・キャロルが「鏡の国のアリス」で、ハンプティ・ダンプティのせりふとして「slithyという言葉は、滑らか(lithe)で粘っこい(slimy)ことだ。2つの意味が1つの言葉に詰め込まれたこの言葉は『旅行かばん(portmanteau)』のようだろう」と言ったのが始まりといわれているそうです。(MMF)
