“under the radar” を取り上げます。はじめに手持ちの英和辞典を引くと載っておらず, 英英辞典で確認したところ, “not getting attention; unnoticed” と定義され, 例文には “He tried to stay under the radar as he went about his business.” とありました(Merriam-Webster.com)。さらにUrbanDictionary.comによると, “another way of saying underground; the opposite of mainstream; usually referring to an artist or song that is undiscovered” という用例が挙げられています。
“under” に因み, 「人知れず, 陰で努力・苦労すること」を指す慣用句「縁の下の力持ち」は, “an unappreciated effort” や “unrewarded drudgery” と表せるとのことです(『新和英大辞典』第四版, 研究社)。先日のゼミで, “effort” には「報われない努力」の意が含まれるため, 相手の労をねぎらう際は “Thank you for your kindness.” が好ましいと教わったことを併せてインプットしたいと思います。(Cayu)
