13-year-old allegedly sells computer virus

The Nara prefectural police Tuesday reported to a child consultation center in the prefecture about a 13-year-old boy who allegedly sold a computer virus on Mercari Inc.’s online flea market website.

According to the police’s cyber crime division, the second-grader at a public junior high school in the neighboring prefecture of Osaka admitted the allegation and said he wanted money.

The police also sent papers to prosecutors on four boys aged between 14 and 19 who are suspected of buying the malware.

Between March 12 and 13, the 13-year-old allegedly gave the four boys and others the address of the website that stored the virus designed to show many male face icons on the displays of iPhones and other devices.

The four boys admitted that they gave the 13-year-old points worth \860 to \1,500 that can be used on the Mercari website, in order to buy the virus for pranks, according to the division.

　prank /prˈæŋk/ を取り上げます。ウイルス入手の目的をさしているようですが、どのような意味があるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（悪気のない）ふざけ、いたずら、冗談」とありました。例として “prank call” 「いたずら電話」が取り上げられています。いたずら目的の軽い気持ちで情報を購入しようと思ったことが伺えます。
　LDOCEには “a trick, especially one which is played on someone to make them look silly” と定義されています。
　語源を調べると、Online Etymology Dictionaryには “of uncertain origin, perhaps related to obsolete verb prank "decorate, dress up" (mid-15c.), related to Middle Low German prank "display" (compare also Dutch pronken, German prunken "to make a show, to strut").” とあり、はっきりした由来はわからないようですが、中世低地ドイツ語からきているのではないかとのことでした。（aqua）
