　13年前、茨城大学農学部に通っていた女子大生が殺害された事件について、フィリピン国籍の工員の男が逮捕されました。

Police make arrest in 2004 rape, murder of university coed

A 35-year-old Filipino factory worker was arrested on suspicion of raping and slaying a female university student whose body was discovered in a river in the prefecture in 2004, police said Sept. 2.

Police arrested Lampano Jerico Mori, who resides in Mizuho, Gifu Prefecture, but declined to confirm whether the suspect admitted to the crimes, citing a possible impediment to the investigation.

Two other Filipino males will likely be placed on the international wanted list in connection with the case. They were minors at the time the incident occurred.

According to the Ibaraki prefectural police, the three are suspected of raping Misato Harada, a 21-year-old student at the school of agriculture at Ibaraki University, on Jan. 31, 2004, with the intent to kill her before strangling her to death.

　strangle /strˈæŋgl/ を取り上げます。 “before strangling her to death” とあることから、死因を表していることがわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）には「1（…）を絞め殺す、窒息（死）させる；　（…）の呼吸を困難にする　2（…）の成長（発展）をはばむ、妨げる」とありました。絞殺で命が奪われたことが読み取れます。LDOCEには “to kill someone by pressing their throat with your hands, a rope etc” や “to limit or prevent the growth or development of something” と定義されています。
　容疑者の他に、共犯とされている2人は国外逃亡中であることから、国際手配を行い、事件の解明に繋げる方針です。（aqua）
