firebug

Survey: Pets, insects cause 56 home fires over 5-year period

Insects have become literal firebugs while pets are fanning the flames of a growing problem that is putting homeowners in danger.

Pets, intrusive animals and insects caused 78 fire-related accidents at homes around Japan from fiscal 2012 to 2016, and 56 of the incidents led to actual fires, according to a survey by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE).

Pets were responsible for 20 of the fires.

In other cases, mice chewed the electrical cords of refrigerators, leading to short circuits that sparked fires, according to the survey.

LDOCEには “someone who deliberately starts fires to destroy property” と定義されています。

(aqua)
