　住宅内でペットが原因の事故が増えているとして、ＮＩＴＥ(製品評価技術基盤機構)が２４日、注意を呼びかけました。

Survey: Pets, insects cause 56 home fires over 5-year period

Insects have become literal firebugs while pets are fanning the flames of a growing problem that is putting homeowners in danger.

Pets, intrusive animals and insects caused 78 fire-related accidents at homes around Japan from fiscal 2012 to 2016, and 56 of the incidents led to actual fires, according to a survey by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE).

　“firebug”を取り上げます。“bug”が含まれているので昆虫を表現するのではないかと推測しました。『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「放火魔」という意味になるそうです。確認のためにLDOCEを引いたところ、“someone who deliberately starts fires to destroy property”とありました。“bug”には「昆虫」という意味の他に、「熱狂家、マニア」という意味があります。これに“fire”がくっついているのが今回の表現です。“arsonist”「放火犯人」という固い表現もありますが、火災の原因に昆虫も関わっているという記述があるので、“bug”が含まれている“firebug”が好んで用いられているのだと思います。(Blue Sky)
